Lake District 2

While the countryside of the Lake District was incredibly beautiful, and towns pretty and twee, they were also very crowded with tourists and cars. We were tourists, with a car, so we only added to the problem when we went into a town.

One day we went to Grasmere. There we bought gingerbread from the celebrated Sarah Nelson who, while clearly not very happy about anything, had reason to be proud of her gingerbread.

Near Sarah Nelson's place was this fancy hotel with conservatory.

We walked up a pedestrian-only road, past this cow, to Alan Bank, a house formerly inhabited by Wordsworth which is now a locale for young and old to spend time in, making tea, eating biscuits, painting watercolours, and wandering the - beautiful - grounds.

In the grounds you could search for a collection of wooden animals, which included this squirrel. The area was home to the rare red squirrel, but it was too rare for us to see on our visit.

I painted this amateur watercolour in the painting room, inspired by Max Ernst.

The view.

I'm sure we have a reproduction of this painting in our house.

Inside the building resembled a decrepit old saloon.

A mole.
