Lake District 1

We arrived in the Lake District which I, with surely many others, thought would be better termed the Hill District. We saw plenty of lakes but far more hills.

Much of the Lake District is set up like an amusement park for adults, with hiking through picturesque countryside the primary activity and incredible pubs with great food and beer waiting at the foot of each hill. This Hansel and Gretel rooftop was our closest pub.

It would stay light until 10ish, but not get properly dark until after midnight. The shifting light over the hills was particularly impressive.

The hills were populated by herds of Herdwick Sheep.

Not sure how many of these we saw, but we heard plenty - each morning and evening was almost overwhelming with diverse birdsong.

We climbed a mountain, with waterfalls and, surprise, a lake at the top.

At the top I found an old metal pipe.

Among the frozen black moss, sheep frolic on steep slopes.

At the bottom of the hill was an amazing pub. We treated ourselves with the Cumbrian Heritage Board.
