Small Northern Village

We arrived at our first Northern destination, a small village in Derbyshire famed for its role in birthing the Industrial Revolution, specifically through the pioneering capitalist ventures of Richard Arkwright. In other words, the decay starts here. That said, the village was fascinating and beautiful and everyone we encountered was extremely friendly.

The village featured one of the world's finest bookshops, where we spent considerable time. Over five floors and many rooms and nooks, with new and secondhand books and a fine cafe, I could have spent a lot longer.

Among others I bought 'Derelict Britain' by John Barr.

The village was also home to a number of small shops, and was mercifully completely free of chain stores. The window to the corner-sweet shop attracted the children.

The view over the lake from the bookshop.

The square in front of the book shop was full of cats.

In back lanes there were allotments and a large well, once connected to supplying water to fuel the spinning mills.
